Portfolio FAQ

Here are some of the most common questions related to student portfolios and Wordpress.

 

How do I log into WordPress? 

Log into your portfolio at sites.dartmouth.edu.

1. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Log In.

2. Use your NetID and password to log in to Wordpress.

3. Mouse over Dashboard and click My Sites.

4. Click on Visit or Dashboard to view or edit your site.

 

 

How do I edit a page?

From the Dashboard:

1. Mouse over Pages, then click All Pages.

2. Mouse over the page you want to edit and click Edit.

3. After your edits are complete, click Update.

 

 

How do I add a page? 

From the Dashboard:

1. Mouse over Pages and click Add New

2. Enter a title for the page in the title field.

3. Add some content for the new page.

4. Click Publish.

 

How do I place a page in the menu? How do I remove one?

The default setting in your WordPress installation places any new page you create within the top-level navigation menu. Thus, any new page you create will appear as a clickable link at the top of your front page. However, you may change this default setting or individually select the pages you would like to appear in your top-level navigation menu.

From the Dashboard:

1. Mouse over Appearance.

2. Click on Menus.

  • From here you may choose to add any existing page to the top-level menu by selecting the page and clicking Add to Menu.
  • Alternatively, you may remove a page from your top-level menu by selecting the page under "Menu Structure" and clicking Remove.
  • If you would like to prevent your newly created pages from appearing in the top-level navigation by default, remove the checkmark next to "Automatically add new top-level pages to this menu" in the Menu Settings.

 

 

How do I upload files? 

From the Dashboard:

1. Select Media, then click Add New.

2. Drag and drop the files onto the screen or click Select Files to navigate to the file on your computer.

 

 

How do I add files to a page or post?

While editing a post or page, click on the Add Media button.

Clicking Add Media brings up the Insert Media menu.

1. Select Upload Files to upload a new file or use Media Library to insert an existing file or image into your post or page. 

2. After selecting the desired file, click the Insert Into Post button at the bottom right of the page.

 

 

 

How do I embed a video into a page or post?

If your video is uploaded to YouTube or Vimeo, it can be embedded into your post simply by copying and pasting the video URL into the body section of your post or page.  WordPress wil automatically embed the video and provide a preview in the visual editor. WordPress will automatically embed video from most of the popular video-sharing sites.

Lynda.com also has some excellent resources for learning WordPress. You can log in to Lynda with your Dartmouth NetID. The “WordPress Essential Training” course is a good introduction to WordPress. Start on section 3, “Starting WordPress for the First Time.”

Please be aware that many of the courses  on Lynda.com discuss installation, creating custom themes, and other functionality that is not supported by the installation of WordPress hosted at Dartmouth.

 

 

How do I change the template? 

If you would like to customize your portfolio, select Appearance from the Dashboard menu. There you may choose a new theme or customize the default.

 

 

How do I restrict access to my portfolio? 

If you choose, you may protect your entire portfolio with a password. To do this you will need to activate a password plugin that is already installed in your Wordpress site.

From the Dashboard:

1. Select Plugins.

2. Scroll down to the plugin called Password Protected.

3. Click Activate.

4. Click Settings for the plugin and create a password in the New Password field.

5. Click Save Changes.

 

 

Can I restrict access to individual pages or posts?

You may protect individual posts or pages with a password in Wordpress.

While editing a page or post, a Publish menu will appear on the top right of the screen.

1. Click Edit to change the Visibility settings.

2. Create a password for the post or page in the menu.

3. Click Ok.

4. Click Update.

 

 

How can I share my portfolio with someone? What about protected posts or pages? 

To share your portfolio with someone, send them your portfolio's url. This should be sites.dartmouth.edu/your_name

If your site or page is password protected, you must also provide your password.

 

 

Can I prevent my site from being indexed by search engines?

You may request that search engines not index your site.

From the Dashboard:

1. Mouse over Settings and select Reading.

2. Under Search Engine Visibility, click the box to "discourage search engines from indexing this site."

3. Click Save Changes.

Although you may make this selection, it is up to the search engine to honor your request.

 

 

How do I customize my portfolio?

  • To change the theme:

From the Dashboard: select Appearance > Themes. This will reveal a collection of themes that
may be used for your portfolio. 

+ Mousing over a new theme reveals two buttons: Activate and Live Preview. Activate will give your site a new theme while Live Preview shows how your site’s content will look in the new theme without actually changing it. Trying out a theme will not affect your site's content in any way. If you'd like to return to a previous theme, just mouse over the desired theme and click the Activate button.

+ Each theme has a unique layout, features, and use case. Some themes are intended for media-rich sites while others are more focused on text and typography. Choose a suitable theme for your needs.

  • Customizing a theme:

To customize your site's active theme, select Appearance > Customize.

+ Each theme has a unique menu for customizing the theme's various features. Since each theme is unique, you will have to explore the customization settings in the theme menu to add things like logos, header images, background images, colors, custom menus, or widgits.

  • Add a page to the primary menu:

The default setting in your WordPress installation places any new page you create within the top-level navigation menu. However, you may change this default setting or individually select the pages you would like to appear in your top-level navigation menu.

From the Dashboard: select Appearance > Menus

+ From here you may choose to add any of your published pages to the top-level menu by selecting the page and clicking the Add to Menu button.

+ Alternatively, you may remove a page from your top-level menu by selecting the page under "Menu Structure" and clicking Remove.

+ If you would like to prevent your newly created pages from appearing in the top-level navigation by default, remove the checkmark next to "Automatically add new top-level pages to this menu" in the Menu Settings.

  • Add a custom link, social media stream(s), or other websites to the menu:

You may use your site’s navigation menu to link to anything on the web, including your social media stream(s). 

From the Dashboard, select Appearance > Menus

1. Select Custom Links.
2. Fill in the URL to your social media stream or website.
3. Give the link a name in the Link Text box. (This will be the text that appears in the menu). 
4. Click the Add to Menu button.
5. Click the Save Menu button.

+ Two themes—Dartmouth Green and Mantra—allow you to make a custom menu for your social media streams, such as twitter, facebook, or flickr. The themes automatically provide the icon for the associated social media service.

To use this special social media menu, first activate one of the themes in Appearance > Themes from the Dashboard. Then select Appearance > Menus.

1. Under “Select a menu to edit,” choose the “Social Media” menu from the dropdown list and then click Select.
2. Fill in the URL to your social media stream or website.
3. Give the link a name in the Link Text box. (This will be the text that appears in the menu). 
4. Click the Add to Menu button.
5. Click the Save Menu button.

The icon for the social media service will then appear in the social media menu at the top right of your site.
