Curriculum

Dartmouth's Institute for Writing and Rhetoric believes that writing and speech are at the center of our students' intellectual experiences.  In this spirit, our courses provide Dartmouth students an environment where they can practice the reading, thinking, writing, and speaking that will shape their intellectual lives.  Our first-year courses—which include Writing 2-3, Writing 5, and the First-Year Seminar—welcome students into the ongoing conversation of scholarship.  Our upper-level courses in writing and the courses in our Speech component are designed to further challenge students, ensuring that they have ample opportunity to develop the rhetorical flexibility that they will need in order to create meaning and communicate effectively in a complex world.
